As frustrating as Jigar can be, he isn’t wrong when he states that the DOE can’t want something more than industry. I appreciated listening to the conversation.

I think my main problem is the fact that these gigantic government loans just end up financing all of the current bloated structures in place that make nuclear hard, and it takes away the incentive to get to projects that make sense on their own financially.

Love the work you do and the podcast. However, hard to be super bullish nuclear when nat gas is so cheap and abundant in the US. In reality, nuclear should be replacing wind and solar while nat gas does the heavy lifting.

I would personally prefer that the U.S. government stay out of financing energy construction of any and all kinds, including payments that mostly go to already big corporations. Instead, Congress should tailor policies that encourage private industry to finance construction of new plants, re-starts of shut-down plants if safely possible, and uprate of existing plants when possible.

The NRC also needs to promulgate rules that address how a plant that has given up its license can then be re-licensed without having to meet the new rules for licensing. Right now, there's no clear path for that.
